So what are manufacturers doing about security on bikes and scooters and what comes as standard ?
Plus what is the MCIA Secured scheme and what information does that give you ?
Manufacturers offer 'standard equipment security' on all models but this differs from bike to bike. On most bikes and scooters under 500cc this is normally just a steering lock and on most bikes over 500cc there is an immobiliser unit that is activated from the key that contains a chip. The only way to be totally sure is to research the specific model and see whats fitted at the factory.
The MCIA Secured scheme allows bike buyers to see what level of security a manufacturer has put onto their new investment to help makje it harder to steal. MCIA Secured gives motorcycles and scooters a rating out of five stars (three stars for bikes of 125cc or less), based on what 'standard equipment security' has been fitted to a new bike as standard at the factory. This can include items such as..........
A steering lock that meets the UNECE 62 standard
An ignition immobiliser system
A vehicle marking system
An alarm system
A vehicle tracking system with subscription
The higher the star rating, the better the security - see the rating charts here
Obviously, the more security you have, the less chance there is of your bike being stolen. In fact a motorcycle research survey showed that using a disc lock makes your machine almost three times less likely to be stolen. Whilst electronic security like Datatag and Trackers can hugely increase the odds of you getting it back.
